Die Holländerinnen by Dorothee Elmiger

This book tells the story of an unnamed author on a reading, split into three days, which tells her journey to a tropical region for a theatre maker who wants to reconstruct the case of two missing dutch women, the “Holländerinnen”. She was tasked to take notes about the whole trip and recites various anecdotes from people in her group as well as herself. The overall theme is that of darkness, of violent nature and monsters you can’t describe with words.
The feeling that is described in the book is something you’re left with after finishing it. One could compare it to the feeling of in-between dream and reality after waking up from a nightmare. I read it in a single day and I liked it, even though it’s certainly not for everyone.
